Regulatory Requirements

According to the Turkish Regulation on Fire Protection of Buildings, external hydrant systems are mandatory when:

  • Buildings are located in specially planned settlement areas separate from general urban zones
  • The total building footprint exceeds 5000 m²

In such cases, an external hydrant network must be installed.


Purpose and Operating Principle

External fire hydrant systems:

  • Provide water supply for fires that cannot be controlled by initial intervention
  • Enable fast water intake for fire brigade vehicles
  • Support containment and suppression of large-scale fires
  • Act as a primary external firefighting water source

Hydrant piping should be designed to cover the entire perimeter of the facility, preferably in a ring (loop) configuration.


Hydrant Spacing Requirements

Hydrant spacing is defined according to risk classification:

  • Very high-risk areas: 50 m
  • High-risk areas: 100 m
  • Medium-risk areas: 125 m
  • Low-risk areas: 150 m

In practical engineering applications, a spacing of 50 meters is recommended to ensure maximum coverage.

Additionally, hydrants should be positioned:

  • Minimum distance from building: 5 m
  • Maximum distance from building: 15 m

Hydraulic Design and Piping

  • System flow rate is determined based on hazard classification and building requirements
  • Pipe diameters are calculated using hydraulic design software
  • Minimum pipe diameter for non-ring systems is 100 mm
  • All design parameters are based on hydraulic engineering calculations

Technical Standards

External fire hydrant systems must comply with applicable Turkish Standards (TS). Common hydrant sizes include:

  • DN80
  • DN100
  • DN150

DN100 is typically the standard size, while DN150 hydrants are used for higher capacity requirements. Hydrant discharge capacity varies depending on inlet and outlet dimensions.


System Safety and Design Features

To ensure operational reliability:

  • One shut-off valve per approximately five hydrant units is recommended
  • Drainage and water discharge systems must be included
  • The system should be divided into controlled zones where applicable
